Farming for Health and Wealth is..........
what, exactly?

Picture
Farming for Health and Wealth is working with communities to increase access to fresh, local food for people in Wyoming and McDowell Counties of West Virginia. By making a better connection between growers and consumers, people in the area will have more food options for their families, and producers will have an increased market for their quality products.  FHW uses the following tools to help make this happen:

  • Coalfields Demonstration Farm  CDF has two locations. The original site in Pierpoint, WV is located on the river next to Route 54 between Mullens and Beckley. FHW also has raised beds, cold frames, and a smaller plot located at the Mullens Opportunity Center (old Mullens Elementary). Coalfields Demonstration Farm sites are home to the monthly FHW workshops and are available for tours throughout the season.
  • FHW workshops  On the 3rd Thursday of every month, new growers and skilled farmers gather at a Coalfields Demonstration Farm site where Jack Seitz will teach on a brief topic and host discussion.  Workshops begin @ 6:30pm.  Topics so far have included Cold Frame Growing and the Brassica Family.  ALWAYS FREE!  Just show up.
  • Coalfields Growers Journal  Coalfields Growers Journal is "a compendium of local goings-on among people who like to raise vegetables, fruits, and animals in Wyoming and McDowell Counties of WV."  This FREE monthly publication is available at FHW workshops, the FHW office, Big Creek People in Action in McDowell County, and at John McGraw Grade School. The Journal is also available online.
